Our Story

Project Rebound was started in 1967 by the late Professor John Irwin. After serving 5 years and paroling from Soledad Prison, John knew that he wanted to better his life situation. He knew that he wanted to learn more about his experiences and the things that he had observed while doing time. He knew he wanted to educate himself and develop his ideas. He also was aware that other people he had served time with in prison had desires to truly educate themselves as well.

The Sociology Department at San Francisco State University supported this effort and Project Rebound was born with a focus on being an alternative to the revolving door policy of the criminal justice system. Supporting and encouraging students to excel in a course of study that they have selected. Project Rebound continues to supports students who understand the power of “Being Living Examples of Successful Reintegration in College Setting”.
